I caught a glimpse of him at the far end of the alley. The dim light surrounded him. He was skinny, hunched with a cigarette in between his lips, blowing out smoke into the air. I strained to see who he was until I realized that the man was staring right back at me. He was wearing a black leather coat with blue jeans and a big noticeable scar on his face, slashing down his right eye. The mysterious man was leaning back, his foot against the brick wall from behind, arms crossed. Once he noticed I was staring at him, he quickly started to walk deeper into the alleyway until he was no longer visible.
I walked in his direction, curious to see where he was going, and it led me to an empty alley with a black payphone at the very end. It's a dead end. 'Where'd he go?' I thought to myself. Just then, I heard footsteps behind me.
"Ma'am, are you okay?" Some voice said from behind. I look and see an old man. "You seem to be dozing off, where are you headed?" He asks politely. I look back in front and notice that the payphone is gone; the whole alley is gone, just a big, empty brick wall. I look back and say, "Yeah, I'm fine, just tired." The old man chuckled, "Me too, here, let me take you home, I insist." 'I don't think it's such a good idea, but it's late,' I think to myself. I look at him with his sweet innocent smile. I look down and eventually say, "That'd be great, thank you so much!" He looked at me and smiled."Well, my pleasure." He says.
He takes me home. It was very quiet and awkward; we didn't say anything to each other. "So, what's your name, girl?" He breaks the silence. It takes me a while to answer, but he is looking at me in the review mirror. "Janet," I say finally. He looks back at the road, nods his head, and says, "Janet, huh? That's a beautiful name. My name is Walter, but my family calls me Pops." He says. "It's nice to meet you, Janet."
There was a random middle-aged man on the sidewalk, on the phone but staring at me. It gave me an uneasy feeling. I try to ignore it and just take some Ibuprofen for my headache.
I doze off, unaware of where we are going. I awaken from my distraction and notice we are about to pass my turn. "Turn here!" I say promptly. He makes a huge turn and loses control of the car, swerving left and right. "Woah!" He says with a nervous face. Then, his car goes straight into another alley but crashes into some kind of invisible barrier. Walter's face hits the steering wheel and the airbags blow. "Walter?" I shout. "Walter, are you okay?" No answer. I think he's dead, or hopefully, he just passed out.
There was a sudden sound, the sound of an old phone ringing coming from a distance. I look up and realize it's coming from the alley. I walk over to it and answer. "Hello?" There was breathing coming from the other end. "Hello, Janet." The voice said. It was a deep, kind of eerie tone to the person's voice. "How do you know my name?" I say with confusion. I was terrified. I looked over to where I came from, and to my dismay, there was a brick wall there. I was trapped.
"I can smell your fear, Janet." The man says. "Who are you, and what do you want from me?" I said attempting to show some confidence, but there was a little shake in my voice. The man laughs, "You've seen me before." I froze, thinking of who this can be. I quickly hung up the phone and attempted to walk out, but again, the path was blocked by a brick wall. I tried to climb it, trying to jump and grab the top but something crazy happened. My hands phased through. I put my hand near it and it passes through. I attempt to walk through it and I do. It's like the wall isn't even real.
I passed through the wall and found out that the car wasn't there, and neither was the man; the whole street was empty. Then, the phone rang again, but this time, it was louder. I try to ignore it but it continuously rings in my head, giving me a migraine. I fall to the ground, grabbing my hair and screaming, "Go away, go away!" I look up and I'm in the alley again, the phone right in front of me. I answer it again but stay quiet. "I see you." He whispers. I looked behind me, and she saw someone. It was him. He was standing there before her, staring at her menacingly.
